Why Did I Choose to Become a Real Estate Agent?

Believe it or not, the path to becoming a real estate agent is not always a lifelong aspiration. For me, it wasn’t always about the profession, but rather the journey and the decisions that led me there.

My Unplanned Journey

Actually, no, I didn’t always want to be a real estate agent! As a matter of fact, a good friend of mine started her real estate career in the 1970s, after graduating from college. She suggested I pursue it as well. But honestly, I didn’t have any passion for the industry. I felt that at the time, I lacked the necessary maturity and self-discipline to succeed in such a demanding field.

After college, I ventured into the retail sector and ascended the corporate ladder. Later, I moved into biotech and followed a similar path in that industry as well. Eventually, I found myself in the medical device sector, which was not a good fit. By the time I decided to branch out, I had already opened a wellness center and a holistic expo. These ventures taught me the value of discipline and drive in pursuing my own ventures.

Paternal Influence and a Career Change

My dad, a property owner all his life, had instilled in me the importance of real estate. Growing up, I often assisted him with various tasks related to his properties. The idea of pursuing a career in real estate started to feel right, and I decided to make the leap.

After leaving my wellness center, the decision to explore real estate again felt appealing. It resonated with me in a way that my previous business ventures had not. As mentioned earlier, ‘the decision to pursue Real Estate just felt good and I have never looked back.’

The Realities of the Real Estate Industry

While the decision to become a real estate agent can be influenced by various factors, it’s important to recognize that this industry is one where freedom of being your own boss and setting your own hours and goals is highly valued. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges.

The vast majority of all real estate professionals come to the business from another industry or job. People make the decision to sell real estate for a multitude of reasons. Some seek the freedom of autonomy and setting their own goals. Others are drawn to the industry because they want to find investment opportunities. And yet, many are motivated by the desire to help others by guiding them through the complexities of buying and selling a home.

When I was 22, my career aspiration was to open my own business. While being a real estate agent is relatively easy to start, it can be challenging to establish a successful career. It takes dedication, resilience, and a strong sense of self-discipline.

Personal Reflection and Growth

Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the various career paths I have taken. Each experience brought its own set of lessons and challenges. The real estate industry, while demanding, offers a unique blend of freedom, financial rewards, and the ability to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. For those considering the real estate profession, it is essential to embrace the growth and challenges that come with it.
